Premium and Discount: The Institutional Price Range

Every price swing has a premium zone (above equilibrium) and a discount zone (below equilibrium). Institutions buy in discount and sell in premium — understanding this framework defines where you look for entries.

The premium/discount framework divides any price range into three zones: discount (the lower 50%), equilibrium (the midpoint), and premium (the upper 50%). The logic is simple: institutions buy at a discount and sell at a premium. Retail traders, driven by momentum and fear of missing out, frequently do the opposite.

Applying the framework

Take any significant swing — the range from a major low to a major high. The equilibrium is the 50% midpoint. In a bullish trend, retracements into the discount zone (below the 50%) offer higher-probability long entries because you are buying at a price where institutional participants typically add to positions. Entries in premium (above the 50%) on a long trade mean you are buying where institutions are selling — the opposite of optimal.

Combining with Order Blocks and FVGs

The premium/discount framework becomes most powerful when combined with Order Blocks and Fair Value Gaps. An Order Block that sits in the discount zone of a bullish higher timeframe range is a significantly higher-probability entry than the same Order Block sitting in premium. The location within the macro range filters which levels deserve attention.

Common mistakes

The most frequent misapplication is using the framework mechanically on a single timeframe swing without considering the higher timeframe context. A discount on the 15-minute chart may sit in premium on the 4-hour chart. The higher timeframe context always takes precedence. Always establish the larger range first.
