Order Blocks represent the price zones where institutional participants last engaged before a significant move. They are the most important level type in institutional price action analysis.
An Order Block is the last opposing candle before a significant directional move. In a bullish context, it is the last bearish candle before a strong rally. In a bearish context, it is the last bullish candle before a significant decline. The logic is that institutional participants used that candle's price range to build their position — and when price returns to that zone, those same participants are likely to defend it.
Large institutional orders cannot be filled at a single price point. A fund managing billions cannot buy at 1.0850 with a single order — the act of buying would move the price immediately. Instead, they distribute their buying across a price range, often disguising accumulation as normal price oscillation. The last bearish candle before a rally frequently represents this accumulation disguised as selling.
Not every opposing candle is a valid Order Block. Quality factors include: the move that followed was significant and decisive; the candle had relatively large body size indicating strong directional commitment; the block has not yet been returned to and traded through; and the block is located at a structurally significant level on the higher timeframe.
An Order Block that has been visited multiple times loses its significance with each visit. The first return to a fresh Order Block carries the highest probability. By the third or fourth visit, the block has been neutralised.
When price returns to an Order Block and the expected reaction occurs, the block is said to have been 'mitigated.' Once mitigated, it no longer carries the same weight as a support or resistance level. Tracking which blocks have been mitigated and which remain fresh is an essential part of maintaining a clean price map.
