The New York Reversal is one of the most consistent intraday patterns in FX trading. It occurs when the London session establishes a directional move that the New York session reverses.
The New York Reversal pattern is based on a structural observation about how the two largest trading sessions interact. London frequently establishes the day's initial directional move, often sweeping liquidity in one direction. New York, opening with fresh participants and a different macro lens, frequently reverses that move and establishes the genuine daily direction.
During the London Kill Zone (02:00-05:00 NY), price makes a directional move — often establishing the Asian session high or low sweep first, then pushing in one direction. As the London session matures and New York participants arrive (07:00-09:00 NY), the initial London move is frequently retraced and reversed.
The New York Kill Zone (07:00-11:00 NY) and the Reversal window within it (09:00-10:30 NY) represent the primary window for this pattern. The reversal is not always clean or immediate — it requires patience and confirmation.
A high-quality New York Reversal requires: the London session made a clear directional push that created a liquidity sweep; the move extended into a significant higher timeframe level (Order Block, FVG, or structural resistance/support); New York opens and there is a character change in price action at that level. The entry is not the reversal of the London move — it is the confirmation that the reversal is underway.
Because the NY Reversal trades against the recent momentum, stop placement must be precise. The stop sits above the London high (for short setups) or below the London low (for long setups), ideally at a level that only a genuine continuation of the London move would reach. A wide stop on this setup defeats the purpose.
