Trading from a single timeframe is one of the most common causes of failed setups. The top-down approach aligns directional bias, context, and entry across multiple timeframes for maximum confluence.
Multi-timeframe analysis (MTFA) involves reading price action across multiple chart timeframes, from highest to lowest, to build a complete picture of market conditions before taking any trade. The higher timeframe defines the directional bias and the significant levels. The intermediate timeframe provides context and setup identification. The lower timeframe provides the entry trigger.
A standard top-down approach for intraday FX trading uses: Weekly or Daily (directional bias and major levels), 4H or 1H (setup context, intermediate structure, key zones), 15M or 5M (entry context, confirmation structure), 1M (precise entry trigger). Each timeframe serves a specific purpose and should not be used interchangeably.
The most important principle in MTFA is alignment: the trade direction must be consistent with the higher timeframe bias. A long entry on the 5M is only valid if the 1H and 4H structures support bullish bias. Trading against the higher timeframe structure is possible but carries significantly lower probability and requires more precise execution.
The most frequent MTFA mistake is starting from the lowest timeframe — finding a pattern on the 1M chart and then checking the 15M to 'confirm.' This inverts the process. The higher timeframe always drives the analysis. The lower timeframe only tells you when and where to enter a setup that the higher timeframe has already identified as valid.
