Commitment of Traders (COT): Reading Institutional Positioning

The CFTC Commitment of Traders report reveals the net positioning of large institutional participants in futures markets. Learn how to read it and what positioning extremes signal.

The Commitment of Traders (COT) report is published weekly by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It shows the aggregate net positions of three participant categories in futures markets: commercial hedgers (corporations using futures to hedge business risk), non-commercial participants (large speculators — hedge funds, CTAs), and non-reportable positions (small speculators — retail).

Who to follow

For directional trading purposes, the non-commercial (large speculator) position is the most relevant. These are the participants with the resources and research to form macro views and act on them at scale. When large speculators build a significant net long or net short position, they are expressing a directional view with real capital behind it.

Extremes as contrarian signals

The most actionable COT signals occur at extremes — when large speculator net positioning reaches historic highs or lows as a percentage of open interest. At extreme long positioning, there are few remaining buyers — anyone who wanted to be long is already long. Small incremental selling can trigger a cascading unwind. This is why COT extremes tend to precede reversals rather than continuations.

An extreme is not an entry trigger. COT positioning can stay extreme for weeks before resolving. It is a filter — when COT shows extreme long positioning in EURUSD, the bias should favour looking for short setups rather than long ones, all else being equal.

Combining with price action

COT data is most powerful when combined with technical confirmation. An extreme COT position that coincides with a significant higher timeframe resistance level, a liquidity sweep, and a session kill zone window creates a multi-factor confluence that individual data points cannot achieve alone.
